Questions about setup, your figures or an invoice. We can't give tax advice, but we'll always explain how MarginVAT worked something out.

What does MarginVAT change in my Shopify store?
Four things, all explained in the app before they happen. It adds the tag "margin-scheme" to products in your stock book, keeps one hidden collection of them, saves an invoice link on each order with margin goods, and (once you add it) shows customers a "Download VAT invoice" button. It never changes your prices, emails your customers or changes Shopify settings for you.
Why does setup ask me to add a 0% tax override?
On its own, Shopify works out VAT as if it were due on the whole price. Under the margin scheme you only owe VAT on your profit, and MarginVAT works that out. The 0% override, on the margin goods collection only, stops Shopify reporting the wrong amount. Your prices and what customers pay don't change.
What happens when I refund an order?
MarginVAT issues a numbered credit note against the original invoice. A full refund reverses the sale and puts the item back in stock if it was returned. A part refund lowers the VAT to what's due on the smaller margin. The adjustment goes in the VAT period of the refund, so returns you've already filed never change.
Where do I find the numbers for my VAT return?
On the VAT return page in the app. Choose the period and copy boxes 1, 6 and 7. Each box shows its working. Add them to the figures for anything else you sell, such as new goods.
How do I remove MarginVAT?
Uninstall it from Shopify's Apps settings. Download your stock book and VAT periods first, because HMRC asks you to keep records for 6 years. Then delete the "Margin scheme goods (MarginVAT)" collection, the 0% tax override and the tag if you no longer need them. We delete your data from our systems 48 hours after you uninstall.
